Remember those Quebec students who went on strike protesting tuition hikes this past spring ?  I bet you thought they would never win ?

Well they won !  Yes for all those who believe university education should “not be almost free” and that students should graduate with big debts ….. well your political friends in the province of Quebec, Canada just got voted out !

He gambled that going to the polls during the second week of university classes would spotlight Quebec’s student unrest, an issue on which his iron hand and unwavering resolve gave him the most credibility among the major party leaders.

Marois is the first female provincial premier in Quebec and they have quite the nationalistic and sort of anti austerity plan. Sorry I mean a plan for industry and government to work better together !?

Marois said Wednesday that she plans to proceed with several key planks in her election platform either by cabinet decree or by legislation.   These include eliminating tuition fee increases, launching a $10 billion fund for the Caisse de dépôt to support Quebec businesses, eliminating the health premium and preventing the elimination of corporate head offices such as Rona if it is sold to U.S. rival Lowe’s.

Martine Desjardins, president of Quebec’s university students association, says Pauline Marois’ promise to cancel a tuition fee hike is a victory for the students group.   Marois, the province’s premier designate, made the tuition fee promise a scant 24 hours after her election.
