Human Nature #5 – Are You Part of The Problem ?!

The greatest crimes of human history are made possible by the most colorless human beings. They are the careerists. The bureaucrats. The cynics. They do the little chores that make vast, complicated systems of exploitation and death a reality. They collect and read the personal data gathered on tens of millions of us by the security and surveillance state. They keep the accounts of ExxonMobil, BP and Goldman Sachs. They build or pilot aerial drones. They work in corporate advertising and public relations. They issue the forms. They process the papers. They deny food stamps to some and unemployment benefits or medical coverage to others. They enforce the laws and the regulations. And they do not ask questions.

Good. Evil. These words do not mean anything to them.

Careerists, the people who keep their heads down and fit in. The ones that tell you what you want to hear, who never, never openly criticise. The ones that make any regime work no matter how distasteful.  They talk about the weather, and the delightful colour Mr Jones has painted the gate but never, never , never will they give genuine opinion on the state of the local government or the hypocrisy of the Church, or anything that ‘may offend’. Politics and religion are never on the subjects for discussion, but these same people will aid ‘authority’ to do whatever it wants.

These are generally weak, and insecure people. The harm they cause is secondary and is due to the environment they are in.

The ones to watch are from an entirely different personality type. They are those that think only of self advancement within whatever parameters that they see as advancement. They do not do empathy or regret and heaven help you if you are an obstacle as they will do whatever they can to remove you.  Some believe them difficult to identify as they come across as charming and concern. IMO most are easy enough to spot, they feel false, their timing is just a bit wrong, the responses just too well practiced.

Good an evil are interesting concepts. If you don’t empathise and do not value life are you more or less evil than the careerist who is just following orders?

    Hello Richard.
Thank you very much for the link. I like Chris Hedges, he is a sane voice in this mad house.

When ever I enroll into “Education” I encounter them, and then I remember why I jumped ship the last time…My gut feeling always says ” Get away from them”.

Still, that’s a pretty defeatist attitude, and leave them in power of many vital conditions for my life.

The most important question is probably: How much am I willing to risk to correct them. Or how much of an accomplice I would become.

    Thanks Richard.

I think I have heard it described as the ‘banality of evil’. So much of this clawing, groveling, groping careerism around.

People have turned themselves into commodities.
A ledger entry for everything. Cost analysis calculations. How do the P&L’s look?
The most ghastly of decisions & instructions made/ masked under the aneathetising effect of ‘the books’.

    Disconnected.
