Education #2 – Update …. Quebec Student Protests Grow

An update on the coming summer of political protests.

“What began months ago as a student strike against the Liberal provincial government’s plan to hike tuition fees by 70 per cent over the next five years has ballooned into a broader social movement supported by several of Quebec’s major labour, environmental and political groups.”

As the article points out and the pictures illustrate …. it is not just young people protesting anymore.

For the 27th night in a row in the city, marchers gathered near the University of Quebec in Montreal and then headed to the heart of downtown.”

“Police declared the demonstration illegal under the province’s new student-crisis law, adopted Friday, as soon as it began around 9 p.m. ET.”

Arcade Fire wear red square on SNL  In New York, members of the Montreal-based rock band “Arcade Fire” wore the  movement’s iconic red squares during an appearance with The Rolling Stones’ Mick  Jagger on Saturday Night Live. Jagger wore a red shirt, but no red square.

This tuition fee increase protest is turning into a major political force and the government has one choice.  Give up the tuition fee increase before  the students loose control of the protest to other political organizations.  Maybe it is already too late ?

Education should be free to all., and I will go one step further, people should be state supported in education as long as they attain levels of growth.
